Should You Switch Off Your Phone to Protect Yourself from Cosmic Rays?

In today’s digital age, it seems like there’s always a new viral message or warning making its rounds on social media. The latest one claims that major organizations such as Google, NASA, the BBC, and CNN are urging people to turn off their electronic devices due to heightened radiation levels from cosmic rays. But is this message legitimate, or is it just another hoax?

According to a thorough investigation by Factly, it turns out that this viral message is nothing more than an old hoax that has been circulating since at least 2010. NASA, the Beeb, and CNN have not issued any official warnings regarding the need to power down electronic devices to protect against cosmic rays. In fact, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) debunked this very claim in 2019, stating that there is no correlation between cosmic ray modulation and the use of mobile phones.

So, what exactly are cosmic rays? NASA explains that they are particles originating from various sources in outer space, including the sun, exploding stars, and black holes. While these particles travel at incredibly high speeds, approaching that of light, they are typically blocked by Earth’s atmosphere upon reaching our planet. As a result, they pose little to no harm to humans.

Health experts, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), also confirm that cosmic radiation comes from stars like our sun and is different from other types of radiation such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The amount of cosmic radiation a person receives varies depending on their altitude. It is strongest in the upper atmosphere and even stronger in outer space. However, the amount most people are exposed to each year is very small and unlikely to have any negative impact on their health.

In addition, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) monitors various solar and stellar rays that could potentially affect electronic devices and power grids. They assure us that cosmic rays do not pose a significant threat to people or Earth’s systems. If there were any real danger, NOAA would issue early warnings to ensure everyone’s safety.

In conclusion, the viral message urging individuals to switch off their phones for cosmic ray protection is nothing more than an old hoax. Major organizations like NASA, the BBC, and CNN have not issued any warnings regarding the need to power down electronic devices due to heightened radiation levels. Health experts confirm that cosmic rays pose little to no harm to humans, and monitoring systems such as those implemented by NOAA help ensure our safety. So, feel free to keep your phone on and enjoy the wonders of modern technology without worrying about cosmic rays.
