North Korea’s Malligyong-1 satellite has defied Western claims that its functionality is unknown by successfully operating in orbit. Although its objectives and capabilities remain unclear, satellite expert Marco Langbroek confirmed that the satellite is indeed functional. This comes as a surprise considering North Korea’s previous unsuccessful satellite launches.
The Malligyong-1 satellite was launched in November 2023 and reached orbit, proving that North Korea has made progress in its space program. Initially, there were doubts about whether the satellite survived orbital insertion and if it was still operational. However, Langbroek’s observations have refuted these claims, revealing that the satellite is alive and well.
One of the main challenges in verifying the satellite’s functionality was the lack of released imagery and signals detected by independent radio trackers. This added to the mystery surrounding Malligyong-1. Nevertheless, Langbroek’s timeline of events showed that the first set of perigee-raising maneuvers were eventually sighted, indicating that North Korea has control over the satellite.
One surprising discovery about Malligyong-1 is its propulsion system. Unlike other North Korean satellites, this one possesses the capability to raise its orbit. Langbroek noted that this is a significant development as it allows North Korea to prolong the satellite’s orbital lifetime and delay reentry into the atmosphere as long as there is fuel left.
Despite evidence of the satellite’s functionality, South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik dismissed its ability to perform tasks or engage in reconnaissance activities. However, Langbroek countered this by highlighting that the satellite’s orbital maneuvers prove its functionality. He also hinted that North Korea may launch another satellite soon.
