NASA Develops New Pulsed Plasma Rocket for Expedited Mars Travel

NASA has teamed up with Howe Industries to develop a groundbreaking propulsion system for a new pulsed plasma rocket that could drastically reduce the travel time to Mars. Currently, it takes around nine months for crewed missions to reach the Red Planet, but this new technology could potentially cut that down to just two months.

So, how does NASA’s pulsed plasma rocket work? The key lies in nuclear fission, where atoms split apart to release energy. This energy is harnessed to create bursts of plasma for propulsion. By creating a controlled stream of plasma, the rocket can generate up to 22,481 pounds of force in thrust while achieving a specific impulse (Isp) of 5,000 seconds. This not only allows for high speeds but also ensures remarkably efficient fuel usage.

While the concept of a pulsed plasma rocket isn’t entirely new, NASA has taken it to the next level with their latest development. In 2018, they began working on a version called Pulsed Fission-Fusion (PuFF), which utilized a z-Pinch device for thrust generation. However, the new pulsed plasma rocket is described as smaller, simpler, and more cost-effective compared to PuFF.

This exciting development is part of NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program. Recently, the program selected six “promising” projects for further funding and development, including the pulsed plasma rocket. Other projects in the program include a lunar railway system and fluid-based telescopes. These science fiction-like concepts have the potential to revolutionize space exploration and open up new possibilities for human missions.

One of the main advantages of this new technology is the reduced time spent in space travel. Currently, astronauts endure long journeys lasting several months, exposing them to space radiation and microgravity for extended periods. By shortening the duration of these trips, the potential harmful effects on their bodies can be minimized.
