China’s Space Ambitions for 2024: Can They Be Achieved?
China’s space sector is set to reach new heights in 2024 as outlined in the CASTG blue book, published by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Group (CASTG). The report highlights China’s plans to accelerate the construction of a space power, with ambitions to set launch records, establish a commercial spaceport, and expand satellite constellations.
One of the key goals for China in 2024 is to set records for the number of launches. CASTG aims to exhibit over 70 launches, with a target of reaching a national record of 100 launches in a single year. However, as of now, only 70 launches are confirmed. In addition to the launches, China plans to launch over 290 satellites, marking a major milestone in their satellite development efforts.
A significant focus for 2024 will be the first launch of China’s Long March 6C and 12 rockets. These rockets are part of China’s Long March rocket series and will play a crucial role in advancing the country’s space capabilities. Furthermore, China is committed to the development of its first space station and aims to send two manned spacecraft into orbit, with two return missions planned as well.
China is also determined to enhance its lunar exploration efforts. The Chang’e 6 probe is set to launch in early to mid-2024, accompanied by the Queqiao 2 satellite. This mission is particularly significant as Chang’e 6 will collect and return the first samples from the underexplored far side of the Moon’s “Pole-Aitken Basin.” This lunar odyssey aligns with China’s broader strategy for lunar exploration in its “fourth phase.”
Reflecting on their past achievements, China has made great strides in its space endeavors. In 2023 alone, China conducted 67 launches, ranking second globally. The Long March rockets completed 47 successful launches, achieving a cumulative launch rate of 500. Of these launches, 20 were commercially-led, showcasing China’s growing presence in the commercial space sector.
As China sets its sights on ambitious goals for 2024, the world eagerly awaits to see if they can maintain their momentum. The blue book offers a comprehensive roadmap for China’s space ambitions, encompassing record-breaking launches, satellite deployment, rocket development, and lunar exploration. With each milestone achieved, China solidifies its position as a major player in the global space industry.
