Fans had hoped that Marvel would honour the birthday of Tom Holland by releasing a trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), the impending MCU Spider-Man sequel, but this did not happen.

For weeks, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have teased the release of new scenes from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the third instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man franchise. In the absence of a Spider-Man 3 preview, fans raced to social media in droves, propelling both actor Tom Holland and Spider-Man: No Way Home to trending status.

The only Marvel Cinematic Universe film set for release in 2021 yet to be teased is Spider-Man: No Way Home. The picture from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures will not hit theatres until December 17th, 2021. But that hasn’t prevented eager fans from expecting to see Tom Holland’s Peter Parker from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the debut No Way Home clip.

June 1 is actor Tom Holland’s 25th birthday, and many fans believed Marvel would choose this date to finally reveal the No Way Home teaser. Marvel very recently pulled off a similar stunt, releasing the teaser for the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) back in April on the birthday of actor Simu Liu. On June 1, actor Tom Holland celebrates his 25th birthday, and many fans expected Marvel to unveil the No Way Home teaser on that day. In April, Marvel pulled off a similar manoeuvre by releasing the teaser for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) on the birthday of actress Simu Liu.

As the public’s desire for a new Spider-Man trailer grew, so did Internet conjecture.

American Doritos, a Twitter user, got creative and set up a little prayer circle inside his 280-character limit in the hopes of receiving divine intervention in the form of a Spider-Man 3 teaser. “Prayer circle: Spider-Man No Home trailer on Tom Holland’s birthday please,” he tweeted.

“Me waking up and finding Sony didn’t release the #SpiderManNoWayHome trailer,” the Tiger from New York tweeted, using an iconic photo of a very angry Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002) in gif style to express his thoughts.

Following the Marvel and Sony no show, S joked that all the Marvel fans anticipating a new teaser on Tom Holland’s birthday were looking like clowns, posting an image of a classic Spider-Man meme with the message,

Everyone who was anticipating the release of the NWH trailer was proven wrong.
