SaxaVord Spaceport stands at the forefront of the UK’s aspirations to establish a robust space launch capability, becoming a focal point for companies like Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) and HyImpulse. This site, located on Lamba Ness in Unst, Shetland, is not just the only licensed vertical launch spaceport in the UK but also a potential cornerstone for Europe’s growing vertical launch capabilities. Despite the challenges faced by the UK space sector, including early failures and slow rocket development, SaxaVord offers a glimmer of hope amid skepticism about the nation’s launch ambitions.

In recent years, the UK has seen a series of setbacks, including the explosion of RFA ONE during a test fire in August 2024 and the failure of Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne at Spaceport Cornwall in January 2023. However, as Frank Strang, CEO of SaxaVord, noted in March 2025, significant investments are being made to enhance the infrastructure at SaxaVord, particularly by RFA. This adaptability could prove vital as the demand for satellite data and launch capacity continues to grow.

The landscape of space launches is shifting towards microlaunches, where smaller rockets carry individual satellites into low-Earth orbit. This model is particularly appealing for clients with specific timelines and operational needs. Martin Coates, CEO of Orbex, underscores the economic justification for microlaunches, especially for replacing constellation satellites quickly—a necessity for mission-critical operations that cannot afford downtime.

However, the journey toward a successful launch at SaxaVord is fraught with challenges. The UK Space Agency’s ambitious goals may seem distant, given the uncertainties surrounding the reliability of newer rocket technologies and the regulatory environment that governs space launches. Dr. Baker expresses concerns about the sustainable commercial viability of UK launches in the long term but advocates for a more unified European approach to space initiatives.

Dr. Baker envisions a future where spaceflight regulations are revisited and refined to balance safety with the commercial interests of launch service providers.
