Karachi: Maulana Adil, head of Jamia Farooqia killed in a firing incident

He had earlier held the post of Secretary-General of Jamia Farooqia, from where he moved to the International Islamic University, Malaysia, where he remained associated with the Faculty of Revelation and Humanities.

In Karachi, Maulana Adil, a renowned scholar of Deoband sect and head of Farooqia University, was shot dead along with his driver. The incident took place between 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm on Sunday night. According to Shah Faisal police, Maulana Adil’s car stopped near Shama Shopping Plaza in Shah Faisal Colony, where the assailant on a motorcycle opened fire on him.

Maulana Adil and driver Maqsood were injured in the incident. Maulana Adil was rushed to Liaquat National Hospital and driver to Jinnah Hospital. Maulana Adil succumbed to his injuries while Jinnah Hospital officials said that the driver was brought dead.

SP CTD Raja Omar Khattab said that three attackers came on a motorcycle. The accused, who was riding a motorcycle, dropped off two assailants near Maulana Adil’s car and parked the motorcycle on the other road. He said that the two assailants fired from a 9mm pistol and the accused were doing reiki of Maulana Adil’s vehicle. The assailants fled the scene. It is still under investigation whether one weapon was used in the attack or more than one.

Briefing to Sindh Government

Earlier, according to a preliminary report given to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah by IG Sindh Mushtaq Mehr, the vehicle targeted was carrying Dr Maulana Adil, Maqsood and Umair. According to the Police statement, as the Vigo car carrying Dr Adil stopped near a shopping centre in Shah Faisal Colony, armed men opened fire on the car and fled. Police found five bullet casings at the scene.

Pakistan’s prime minister, army chief and political and religious leaders have condemned the attack on Maulana Adil and expressed regret over his death.

Maulana Adil a renowned academician

Maulana Adil was the president of Jamia Farooqia. The Jamia, which has the status of a university, offers PhD level education in addition to MA in Arabic and Islamic Studies. He had earlier held the post of Secretary-General of Jamia Farooqia, from where he moved to the International Islamic University, Malaysia, where he remained associated with the Faculty of Revelation and Humanities.

Maulana Adil’s father was Maulana Saleemullah, a well-known scholar and teacher of the Deoband sect, and for a long time was the president of the Federation of Arab Madrassas.

Maulana Saleemullah Khan was a graduate of Darul Uloom Deoband and came to Pakistan in 1955.

After the death of his father in 2017, Maulana Adil returned home from Malaysia and took charge of Jamia Farooqia.

Attack before PDMA rally

Pakistan’s United Opposition PDMA has announced a rally in Karachi on October 18. This sad incident took place a week before the rally. Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed the police authorities to take immediate action to arrest the killers and said that some extremists want to disturb the peace of the city.

This is the second major attack in Karachi in a year. Earlier, in March last year, the head of Darul Uloom Korangi, Mufti Taqi Usmani, was attacked in which he survived but two people were killed.
