The Future of Artificial Intelligence: Key Takeaways from Microsoft Build 2024

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently took the stage at the annual Microsoft Build developer conference to unveil several groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. This comes on the heels of the company’s announcement of new Copilot+ PCs and just days after Alphabet’s Google I/O developer conference. Here are the key takeaways from Nadella’s keynote address.

Introducing Team Copilot, Copilot Extensions, and More

Nadella introduced Team Copilot, an expansion of Microsoft’s Copilot chatbot that brings a personal AI assistant to Microsoft 365 users. This new feature can manage agendas, take notes, and provide contextual answers to questions. Team Copilot is set to be available in preview later this year for select Microsoft 365 customers.

In addition, the CEO announced new agent capabilities in Microsoft Copilot Studio to assist developers in building their own copilots. These new features are currently available through Microsoft’s Early Access Program and will be more widely available in preview later this year.

Nadella also unveiled Copilot extensions, which allow users to connect to new sources and applications to enhance the assistant’s capabilities. The first set of Copilot extensions for GitHub, Microsoft’s developer platform, are already available in private preview, enabling developers to customize their GitHub experience.

Expanding AI Partnerships With Hugging Face and Others

Microsoft has been actively collaborating with various companies to advance AI technology. Nadella highlighted partnerships with Nvidia and Open AI, emphasizing the importance of these relationships in driving innovation. The company extended its partnership with Hugging Face to bring their models to Azure AI Studio and announced a new partnership with Cognition AI, an AI startup specializing in software development on Azure.

Microsoft also revealed a partnership with Khan Academy focused on leveraging AI to enhance educational materials. By providing Azure infrastructure access, Microsoft is supporting Khan Academy in making its AI teaching assistant, Khanmigo, freely available to teachers.

New Small Language Model and Real-Time Intelligence

Microsoft introduced Phi-3-vision, a new multimodal model with audio and vision capabilities as part of its Phi-3 family of small language models (SLMs). These SLMs are designed to be more cost-effective than large language models (LLMs) and cater to specific use cases. Phi-3 SLMs are now available on Azure AI and Hugging Face.

Nadella also announced Real-Time Intelligence on Microsoft Fabric, an AI-powered analytics platform that enables organizations to make informed decisions in real-time. This feature is currently in preview, offering organizations valuable insights for immediate action.

Updates on Microsoft’s Custom Chip and AI Infrastructure Offerings

Microsoft unveiled a preview of its new custom silicon Arm-based processor, Cobalt 100, which was announced in November. Nadella highlighted the chip’s performance capabilities for running general and cloud-native workloads, boasting a 40% improvement in performance compared to previous models.

Furthermore, Microsoft announced that it is the first cloud provider to offer AMD’s leading MI300X AI accelerator chip through the Azure ND MI300X v5 series. This chip is part of Microsoft’s comprehensive infrastructure approach to AI, empowering customers with advanced AI training and inferencing capabilities.

As the landscape of artificial intelligence continues to evolve, Microsoft remains at the forefront of innovation, driving advancements in AI technology through strategic partnerships and cutting-edge solutions. The key takeaways from Nadella’s keynote address at Microsoft Build 2024 underscore the company’s commitment to shaping the future of AI and empowering developers and users alike with transformative AI experiences.
